Explore on foot
This gentle circular walk takes in Stamford's finest streets, churches and riverside views. Allow around one to two hours at a leisurely pace. Print it out and bring it with you.
Circular walk · approx. 2 miles · 1–2 hours · start and finish on Broad Street
Start: Broad Street
Begin on Broad Street, home of the Friday market. Look up at the fine Georgian shopfronts before heading east towards St Mary's Street.
St Mary's Church & St Mary's Hill
Pass St Mary's Church with its soaring spire, then climb St Mary's Hill — one of the prettiest streets in town.
All Saints' Church & Red Lion Square
Turn into Red Lion Square, framed by medieval and Georgian buildings, and visit All Saints' Church, mentioned in the Domesday Book.
St John's Church & High Street
Walk up to the High Street, Stamford's main shopping street, lined with independent shops beneath unspoilt stone facades.
St George's Church & St George's Square
Continue to St George's Square and St George's Church — look for the gargoyles guarding the corners.
Barn Hill
Drop down Barn Hill, the town's most photographed street, a perfectly preserved sweep of Georgian and medieval stone houses.
St Leonard's Priory
At the foot of Barn Hill, detour briefly to the Norman ruins of St Leonard's Priory, one of Stamford's oldest remains.
Town Bridge & the River Welland
Cross the Town Bridge over the River Welland. Pause for views back to the town's famous skyline of spires.
St Martin's & the Stamford Baron
Explore St Martin's, the antique-shop quarter south of the river, and St Martin's Church with its Burghley chapel monuments.
Finish: Recreation Ground & Meadows
Return over the bridge and finish with a stroll through the Recreation Ground and water meadows beside the Welland.
